13 Recruitment Trends You MUST Know

13 Recruitment Trends You MUST Know Brexit, Trump, AI, Big Data, Microsoft+LinkedIn and the Randstad Monster Its no secret that 2016 has been a massive  year for politics, technology and economics, but what are the real  knock-on effects  to agency-side recruiters working as third party talent suppliers? How is the recruitment landscape adapting? Will  your business boom in the new year, or are you doomed? Will advancing  recruitment technologies be your career killer, or make you top biller?  How can you up-skill to keep ahead of the pack? To help you cut through the endless conjecture out there, we called in 13 of the  industrys best  to forecast what the face of recruitment will look like in 2017. Read on for their interesting takes on the biggest trends set to rock the recruitment world next year: Bronwen Hann One big trend that’s taking off more than ever is companies recruiting contingent workers. Whether you want to call it contracting, or consulting, or the “gig economy,” more companies than ever are choosing to “rent” rather than hire talent, even at the director level and above. In addition, skill requirements are becoming broader and more stringent. Some enlightened companies are beginning to hire creatively to attract the best people â€" for example hiring back “boomerang” employees, hiring from the plethora of highly-skilled newcomers arriving daily, having less of a stigma against “job hopping” â€" but some companies will continue to be rigid in their hiring requirements and they’ll miss out on the best people because of it. Bronwen Hann is  President   Senior Partner at Argentus Supply Chain Recruiting David Morel I expect the New Year to start slowly as the reality of Brexit and the triggering of Article 50 puts many businesses off hiring until there is further clarity on free trade versus free movement of labour. That said, there will be a pick-up of some sorts in week two or three. Candidate flow will pick-up in January as it is a prime time for many to look for a new role.  On the assumption that Article 50 is triggered by the end of March as promised by the government, then I expect an immediate pick-up in business in the short-term regardless of whether the outcome is perceived to be positive or negative for the UK economy. If negotiations look as though they will be complicated or there is a delay in the triggering of Article 50, then I expect the recruitment industry to suffer as a result.  The outcome of the US election is a positive for the UK recruitment industry as, in my view, businesses are less likely to relocate staff, unless they have no choice through regulatory reasons. Eur opean elections will also have little effect. David Morel  is CEO Founder of Tiger Recruitment Angela Bortolussi This year, rather than dismissing data as another recruitment fad it’s something that many of us [recruiters] have learned to appreciate. Why? Well, I can speak to my experience in the use of data leveraging HR technology tools and sites. I can better assess whether a candidate will fit the right skill set of a role that just skims the surface, I’ve been able to build concrete-robust queries allowing for better candidate searches unveiling a plethora of sites to find candidate information and use that information to engage with candidates. To be clear, leveraging data in your recruitment process presents both a challenge and an opportunity. In 2017, I think data will enhance the human-centric aspect to recruitment, rather than eliminate it. In addition, candidate experience a topic widely spoken about in 2016 will be a continuing trend into 2017. The approach to candidate experience though may be a different in 2017. How? I see organization’s focusing on mapping out their candidate journey which allows organizations as a whole to view the journey of candidates’ experience through the recruitment process (i.e. initial reach out -to offer stage). Giving companies visibility on engaging quicker, and closing faster. Angela Bortolussi is Partner at  Recruiting Social Billy Smith With job seekers pressed for time and job hunting on the move, recruiters and employers will need to think mobile first ensuring their web pages are optimised for display on mobile screens. as money becomes less important with jobseekers, Standout job ads will also play a huge part in recruiting talent in 2017 as the competition to attract quality candidates increases. Money isn’t the be all and end all for today’s job seekers with employers needing to show personality and benefits in their job adverts. Billy Smith  is Managing Director at FGS Recruitment Iain Hamilton Over the next year, recruiters, both in-house and agency, are going to be given the opportunity to use the data they create for actionable intelligence. Until now we have focused our data analysis on the source of a hire, how long it takes to hire someone and the more advanced have been using data to remove blockers in the recruitment process. Now we are going to be able to understand every interaction a candidate has with our business and hence the content which best influences their decisions to apply and accept a position. Talent Generation Managment is here. Iain Hamilton is Founder of People Traction Adam Glassman While it’s not new per se, I do expect to see a greater emphasis on employer branding and an improved candidate experience in 2017. It’s largely a candidate’s market right now, and selling the “why” of your company, along with providing a positive impression, are two winning combinations. Adam Glassman is Recruitment Strategies Manager at Alorica Gill Buchanan The balance of power will continue to shift from employer to candidate. Candidates will feel more empowered to seek new opportunities and to negotiate terms. Employers will be expected to focus on their brand and engagement strategies to help attract and retain top talent.  From a technology perspective, CV screening using on-line questionnaires is growing in popularity, particularly for high volume roles or where there is a stronger pool of candidates. Applications are increasingly being received and delivered on smart phones and instant messaging, rather than emailing, is on the rise. Gill Buchanan  is Director at Pure Resourcing Solutions Chad MacRae Design thinking. It’s a mindset, a way to solve complex problems. It really helps you empathize with your client, your hiring manager, your candidate. It helps you come up with unexpected, imaginative solutions that really benefit the stakeholders you’re working with. I really believe that we’re going to see design thinking practices and tools, like candidate journey mapping, used in recruitment. Chad MacRae is Founder of Recruiting Social Lisa Jones New recruitment trends? Im hoping for innovation without tech! What I mean by this is getting to grips with process, rather than the current trend of FOMO (fear of missing out) and hence using every bit you can lay your hands to source talent. Lisa Jones  is Director at Barclay Jones James Nathan Going into 2017 I can see hiring volumes continuing to grow and a subsequent move by employers to push for employee referrals as a sourcing focus in order to control increasing costs. This trend is not different to what we have seen before in growing markets, and it is important for recruiters to take a long term, relationship approach to their client development and candidate development work. The better the relationship you build and the great value you can add for your clients, the less likely they will be to look for other avenues for attracting new hires.   James Nathan  is  Founder of The James Nathan Experience Dualta Doherty More automation tools to cut administration. More focus on Digital Marketing Content Creation. More focus on social analytics in reviewing performance. An increase in remote/flexible/work from home options. Dualta Doherty  is Founder of Pro Recruitment Solutions Lysha Holmes I expect to see a lot more through video and engaging the candidate experience through social media channels such as instagram and snapchat. Real people being spoken to. More recruiters need to look at what the brands are doing like innocent, the body coach- and realise that your marketing has to reflect where people spend most of their time- on the smart phones on these apps. Not on job boards. My instagram channel is my busiest now @LyshaHolmes and its a combination of real video ads and also pics of what I eat for lunch :) Lysha Holmes  is Founder of Qui Recruitment Caroline Stokes Talent acquisition and placement expediency will never go out of style. Neither will the fascination of the next technology solution that can help us find the right candidate for the right role, in a fraction of the time.  The real trend I see for 2017 onwards is less about technology, but about individual development of emotional intelligence that will enhance performance and productivity. The unexpected side effects of this will be slower burnout of recruiters and improved relationships with HR, hiring managers and talent. Caroline Stokes  is Founder of FORWARD

A Presentation that Reflects Positively on Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

A Presentation that Reflects Positively on Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Knowing how to deliver a good presentation is an important skill for everyone, whether theyre still students or the leaders of an organization. The knowledge that an individual possesses doesnt make a difference if they don’t know how to convey those thoughts concisely. If you are a small business owner, having a superior product is likewise not a guarantee that your business will sell loads of it and be successful if you dont know how to present the product in a way that will convince your audience to purchase it.   An individuals success is directly related to their ability to influence others, because having good presentation skills captures the interest of the audience and eventually transforms their view to your point of view. The skill to speak effectively is crucial to building a brand and to the success of the business. If you are someone who is very knowledgeable about your field of work and you have the ability to share that knowledge effectively, people will look to you as an expert in that field. This in turn, will help you in your word of mouth marketing strategy for the brand because people will not only rely on your products, they’ll also look for advice and recommendations. But not everyone has the gift of gab. In fact, a lot of people dread speaking or presenting in public. This doesnt mean that this skill cant be learned. With this in mind, here are some of the tips that will get you comfortable when speaking in public so you have a positive impact on others. Public speaking tips Your presentation skills are greatly influenced by the efforts you put into preparation. Start with choosing the right clothes to wear. Dressing is very important in creating an impression to the audience. Aim for a decent and professional look; it makes you more comfortable and confident, aspects that will be reflected to the audience who will focus more on what you have to say rather than your clothes and appearance. Prepare visual aids, handouts, posters, and other helpful material to aid your oral presentation. Not everyone in your audience will concentrate for the full length of the presentation, so these aids come in handy to pique their attention. Prepare a speech beforehand. Thoughts are scrambled and words are hard to put together if you choose to do things on the fly. A readily prepared speech gives you pointers to base the presentation on, and also conveys an organized flow of thought and ideas. Don’t forget to practice it, too!   Have a clear message. It is essential that you know the purpose and objectives of the message.  [tweet this] Be clear and concise in your delivery. Again, the audience will likely shift their attention to something else if you start rambling on about a particular highlight. Keep it at most three points per topic, to keep from burdening the audience with too much information. Further explanations to particular topics can be supplemented by printed handouts and booklets. Deliver your message effectively. It is very important to know how to express your message to your audience. Avoid using words or phrases that are unfamiliar with your audience, or that may be deemed as technical/jargon. Be conscious of the tone of your voice as it will set the mood. It helps to share stories, quotes, and anecdotes that your audience can identify with. Doing this increases the engagement levels with the audience, and makes them more receptive to the presentation.   At the end, interact with them by asking questions or feedback about what you have just presented. Public speaking, though not easy at first, is a very important tool to keep in your word of mouth marketing arsenal. It provides you with a clear path to the audience’s mind, so you have to be on your A-game before, during, and after the presentation. Keep these tips in mind and youre sure to pull off a great public presentation. The DIY Dream 8 Must Haves for the Home Handywoman

The DIY Dream â€" 8 Must Haves for the Home Handywoman Image by LadyDIY from Pixabay If you’re a handy chick who likes to get up close and personal with home DIY projects, you need a well-stocked tool kit. They come in all shapes and sizes, but the important thing is that you get the basics right. For instance, not everybody is going to need a three in one wood planer, but all DIY enthusiasts need a sturdy hammer and some good screwdrivers. The problem with most tool collections is that there’s no organization. People tend to get excited and buy expensive products, but they don’t always use them. They end up gathering dust in a garden shed because the purchase was made on a whim. Ultimately, you only need a few items to start with. You can build up your collection in stages. This guide to creating the ultimate home toolkit will help you get the pieces in the right place. The Toolbox You can’t start a collection without having somewhere safe to put it. Strong, sturdy plastic containers are widely available and they lend themselves very well to tool storage. If you’ve got young children, it is a really good idea to invest in lockable chests. Claw Hammer The claw hammer is the multipurpose tool of the hammer world. If you’re only going to get one, make it one of these. You can use it for levering out nails just as easily as driving them into wood, metal, or plastic. Adjustable Wrench Most high-quality wrenches are adjustable these days because you can’t swap it out for a new tool every time that you encounter a different sized bolt. This would take far too long, so use a wrench which is versatile. Combination Pliers You need a good pair of combination pliers for holding, turning, and pulling out different sized nails. Find a pair with a comfortable, no-slip handle so you don’t have trouble gripping when you’re levering nails out. LED Flashlight Many DIY fans forget to include a flashlight in their toolkits, but it is essential. When you find yourself rooting around in the basement after a power cut or fixing a leak in the attic, you need a reliable torch. LED designs are extremely powerful and can be picked up at affordable prices. Awl The curiously named ‘awl’ is a little tool designed for making and starting off nail holes. It has a sharp end which is driven into the wood or plastic. The handle is normally rounded so that you can keep a firm grip while applying pressure. Flat/Cross Head Screwdrivers No tool kit is complete without a set of flat head screwdrivers. In fact, you won’t get very far in most DIY projects without them. It is worth investing a little more for a premium product because they should last you many years. Pick up a set of cross head screwdrivers as well, so that you can deal with any nail you encounter. Retractable Tape Measure Retractable, lockable tape measures are widely available and really cheap to buy. Most homeowners have a number of these in different places around the house. Just dig one out whenever it is time to start a new project. Why DIY Is the Modern Woman’s Game Every year, the number of women getting into DIY grows, because modern ladies are no longer content to leave the fixing, repairing, and creating to men. They want to get their hands dirty and experience the satisfaction that comes with having solved a problem. The power of DIY is often underestimated. It is soothing, relaxing, and extremely rewarding too.

5 Ways to Energize A Long Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

5 Ways to Energize A Long Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Job search can be a rollercoaster ride, from the thrill of a forthcoming interview to the letdown of losing out on a job to another ‘more qualified’ candidate.   Sometimes weeks, months â€" even a year or more â€" pass and you’re still sitting, glued to your computer, wondering when your resume submission will spark interview glee. What do you do when job search stagnation sets in, and the glimmer of hope starts to fade? Here’s a look at five ways to help get your job search energized. 1. Phone a Friend. While you may feel the threads are bare and that you have no right to use that lifeline yet again, do so. But this time, don’t call to kvetch about the lack of opportunities and your unlucky situation. Instead, invite them over for coffee or for movie night. Fetch your favorite romantic comedy, adventure, suspense thriller or whatever is your preferred DVD distraction and immerse your mind and soul. Reconnecting on a more joyful level while also distracting yourself is healthy personally and for your career. Often your mind comes up with the greatest solutions when it is at rest. 2. Volunteer. If you aren’t already doing so, volunteer your time and be visible to a possible new job connection. Physically leave the house to do this. Research local chapters of your professional or industry association. Start with Job-hunt.org’s Directory of Professional/Industry Associations. Find a local professional chapter; call the president; attend the next meeting. The Directory includes a variety of specialized categories to help you to narrow down your search for career and employment links related to your particular industry, profession or group. In addition to the other benefits, volunteering can be a great stopgap in your resume, providing concrete evidence that you are still contributing professionally. 3. Visit the Library. Another way to bolster your search while also disengaging from the confines of your 12×12 home office is to go to the library or to the local Starbucks or Panera Bread Company. The point is to change your environment â€" regularly. In Alison Doyle’s article, “Get Job Search Help at the Library,” she describes how libraries provide many other resources for job seekers beyond job search- and career-related books. Libraries offer job search and computer classes as well as computers with Internet and email access; some even offer stress-reduction classes like yoga and meditation. The simplicity, the order, even the aroma of a library has appeal for some who simply need calm outside of the storm that often swirls around you at your home. 4. Revise Your Plan: If you do not already have an action plan with specific accomplishment goals and deadlines for your job search, create one now! Even if you are weeks (or months) into the search, it’s never too late to develop this plan. Use a separate notebook. If you must, computerize these ideas but then print them out from time to time and tick off tasks and milestones; scratch top-of-mind notes in the margins. Drive traction through these actionable steps, and you’ll make more progress. 5.  Be Willing to Change. Most of us have a propensity to get stuck in our ways and unwittingly resist change. In job searching, this resistance may manifest itself by refusing to improve your resume story; resisting to join social media (i.e., Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest are “silly” and “wasteful uses of my time”); or picking up the phone to make a cold call regarding a job opening. Make a change. Hire a resume writer or career coach or attend a local job search event to help you reframe your value propositionâ€"you may be turning hiring decision makers off with your current, lackluster message. Listen to what others suggest and apply it to your job search. Sometimes the smallest changes can spur the biggest improvements. If your job search ship seems anchored to bedrock, you can remove that weight and free your thoughts and emotions, creating momentum. Even if the changes to your current strategies feel unnatural and uncomfortable at first, you won’t regret switching things up. While trying something new may require several attempts to achieve results, keep trying. It takes only one right opportunity to align with your preparedness to turn your situation from “job seeker” to “employee!” Author: Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter is a Glassdoor career and workplace expert, chief career writer and partner with CareerTrend, and is one of only 28 Master Resume Writers (MRW) globally. Our guide to building your smart-casual work wardrobe this summer

Our guide to building your smart-casual work wardrobe this summer Forging a work wardrobe is an art, especially when the dress code is smart-casual.  I mean, what does smart-casual actually mean? What types and styles of clothing fit into that category? Read on for some tips on how to nail this look for summer and impress your colleagues no end.   One piece of advice; you can’t ever be too formal in the workplace, unless you turn up in a tux, in which case you might get strange looks. It’s better to err on the side of caution than be too casual. Another thing; look at what the high-up people in the company are wearing and try to match their level of dressing. The way you dress in the workplace can influence people’s opinion of you, even if that seems materialistic. So power dressing, here we come. Women Culottes   Missguided You probably already know that culottes are a fashionable choice for the workplace right now. But did you also know that they are light and comfortable; the perfect summer item? You can grab them for under £20 from ASOS and New Look. Plus, here is an item you can dress up for work, but also save for the weekend if you pair them with trainers. Wear with: a collared shirt, a chiffon top, or a plain tee, depending on how smart you want to go. Then choose a gorgeous pair of heels or some flat ballet pumps to go with them. Long pleated skirt P.A.R.O.S.H Long pleated skirts come in different materials, from chiffon to leather and you can choose both plain and patterned designs. They are the perfect smart-casual summer option, appropriate for work since they fall to the knee but floaty enough to feel like you’re dressing for the season. Wear with: a strappy cami or long-sleeved top tucked in to your skirt. Then choose either open-toe heels or sandals. Pencil dress French Connection Pencil dresses are classic and great for showing off your figure. Choose one which sits on or just below the knee, and decide whether you want to add a belt. Check out Boohoo or HM for some smart work dresses at great prices. Wear with: a light cardigan and a low-heeled shoe. Make sure that the dress fits you properly and is comfortable to sit and walk in. You don’t want it to be too tight in the hot weather. Three-quarter length trousers Pinterest This is a staple item for your summer work wardrobe. Go for a black pair if you want them to go with everything, or a lighter colour if you want them to look more seasonal (as long as you won’t spill your lunch on them). You can find these trousers for reasonable prices, but it is worth investing in a pair which fit you well. Wear with: a plain top or blouse and summer blazer. You can choose whatever shoe you like with this outfit; it looks equally great with flats or heels. A-line skirt with high-neck top Motel Rocks If you want to tan your legs, this is the choice for you! This is a great piece of clothing to get you in the mood for summer, and perfect to wear on a Friday because it looks equally good on a night out. Just make sure you don’t go too short! Wear with: a high-neck top or jumper, and flat shoes. Pack a sparkly top in your bag if you’re going straight out on the town afterwards! Men Chinos Pinterest This look is probably as casual as you want to go, but works very well as long as it matches the office vibe. Before you try this out, take a note of what other people are wearing. If there are chinos aplenty as you walk around the office, you can go ahead and rock this look. Wear with: a collared but casual shirt in a colour which goes well with your chinos. Trousers and waistcoat Looktastic This sounds very formal, but you can easily make this fit the smart-casual dress code. Choose a pair of trousers with a matching waistcoat, then through a casual blazer or jacket over the top. Wear with: a casual shirt, in whatever pattern you like, a jacket or blazer, and smart shoes. Trouser and jumper combo All Saints This is definitely a winner. Choose smart trousers but soften this look with a jumper on top. Go for darker colours with a light shirt underneath for ultimate sophistication. Wear with: smart shoes and a light-coloured shirt. Smart jeans and shirt Pinterest Just like the ladies, here is your perfect dress-down Fridays option. You should still distinguish between office and loungewear on these days, so making a pair of jeans look smart is the way to go. Men’s clothes can be pricier than women’s sometimes, but at least with these items you can wear them at weekends too. Wear with: a casual shirt or smart jumper. The full monty I have some pretty good news. You can go all-out suit without looking like you’re trying too hard. The key is choosing materials and patterns which don’t look like a traditional suit then just completely owning the outfit. Power dressing to the max! How to wear: Achieve the smart-casual suit look by choosing suede trousers, a patterned shirt, and a tie. Team this with a casual blazer and add a belt. If dressing for work has been a worry, hopefully you feel a bit more confident now. From my experience, the key with the ‘smart-casual’ dress code really is paying attention to what your colleagues are wearing and matching their level of formality. Remember that office wear does not having to be boring either. You can still inject your fashion sense into your outfits and spice them up with accessories. Equally, don’t feel like you have to spend all your money on clothes for work. Many high-street and online shops have the items mentioned above at very reasonable prices, and even better is when you can buy clothing which works for both weekends and work days. 20 Rule to Work Smarter - Career Advice Blog for Millennials

How to Use the 80/20 Rule to Work Smarter - Career Advice Blog for Millennials Once upon a time, the 80/20 rule had nothing to do with the workplace. Instead, economist Vilfredo Pareto used it to describe an upsetting economic trend in Italy, his home country, where 20 percent of people held 80 percent of the country’s wealth. He said this in 1906 and by 1940, the 80/20 rule was known as Pareto’s Principle or Pareto’s Law. Today, though, the idea of an 80/20 split doesn’t always apply to the distribution of wealth. We’ve widened our gaze to see that it could apply to the workplace. 20 percent of our efforts cause 80 percent of our results, for example. Or, it might be present on a to-do list, where 20 percent of our tasks take up 80 percent of our resources. At some companies, four-fifths of the revenue comes from one-fifth of the clients. This list could go on and on. But the 80/20 rule isn’t just a trend you note retroactively â€"  you can apply it to your mindset to make yourself a better, more productive worker. Here’s how to do it: 1. Break Down Your To-Do List Keeping a detailed schedule is one of the best ways to tackle an overwhelming workload â€" you and your colleagues can see what you’re doing, where you’ll be and when. Still, you could be marking off your long list of to-dos the wrong way. To be more productive, you should take care of your toughest tasks first. Think of it this way â€" 20 percent of the items on your list, the big projects, will generate 80 percent of the results. It can be gratifying to cross off all the tiny to-dos you have lined up, but you won’t have as much to show for it. 2. Take a Step Back If you’re in a managerial role, you probably have your hand in everything. You lead meetings, check in on progress and have no problem hopping into the trenches with your team when they’re struggling. A step back can serve you well, especially if you want to work smarter. As an observer, you might see that some of your team’s tasks are expendable or not as worthwhile as other tasks. On the other hand, you might realize that one neglected task could bring the whole operation down. Looking at a bigger picture can help you trim 20 percent of the work you don’t need to do, or show you what generates 80 percent of your results so you can put your focus there. 3. Ask for Feedback Another way to ensure you’re working smarter is to ask your boss or your clients for feedback. We already know the importance of these discussions since feedback tends to leave both people in the conversation satisfied, and it can increase your sense of belonging at your company. But applying the 80/20 rule here will make you more productive, too. By seeking out feedback, you can see what aspects of your performance generate the most success. Your clients or your boss might uncover places where you can focus more on an effort to enhance and increase results. And, just like that, you have your 80/20 thanks to an honest, open conversation. 4. Don’t Neglect the 80 Percent We’ve already mentioned the fact that 20 percent of your customers probably produce 80 percent of your income. You’re likely to funnel more of your time and energy into these organizations and for a good reason. The whole point of the 80/20 rule is to balance your efforts so that you’re making the most impact, after all. You shouldn’t apply the same mindset to your team, though. Picking and choosing whose careers to champion based on their performance could hurt the team in the long run. So, push everyone to become part of the 20 percent who’s bringing in 80 percent of the revenue. Not everyone can hold the best rank, of course, but your team will be more productive overall if they’re motivated to become better and produce more positive results. 5. Apply It to Potential Pitfalls Too Every project incurs a risk â€"  you know this already. There’s so much you can do to evaluate the risk of a particular venture such as writing down all of the ways you could lose, calculating the likelihood that this would come to fruition and tallying up how much that loss would cost you. Once again, you’re likely to find that just a few of the risks are substantial â€" they’ll cause 80 percent of your problems. These are the facets you should be carefully monitoring, and you should have a plan of action in place in case one of them comes to fruition. This isn’t to say you should completely ignore every other potential risk, but you should place them on a sliding scale of importance and, therefore, attention. Give It Your 80/20 The bottom line is, you don’t have to give everything your all. Instead, you can focus your efforts on what’s most important and reap the benefits of doing so â€"  namely, you’ll be working smarter, not working harder, and you’ll be achieving more.
