5 Reasons for Engineers to Give Back

5 Reasons for Engineers to Give Back 5 Reasons for Engineers to Give Back 5 Reasons for Engineers to Give BackThe work of engineers is intertwined with every aspect of society. They apply their skills and expertise to the bridges we drive over, the irrigation systems that sustain our agriculture, the machines that save our lives, and so much more.In other words, engineers are indispensible to our very way of life.Theres a lot of good that can be done with those essential skills and not just through a day job. There are a number of volunteer and charitable opportunities specifically designed for engineers to lend their unique and valuable skill platzset to the community. Dozens of organizations, such as Engineers Without Borders, exist for this very purpose. And using your engineering skills to give back isnt just incredibly valuable to the world at large its also beneficial for you. Some of our volunteers have said that theyve reached a point in their career where they feel like they have more to offer. Jaclyn Wilmot, Engineers Without Borders USAHere are some of the top reasons why engineers should give back to their community1. Hone your skillsIf youre an engineer just starting out in the field, or if youre a college student currently pursuing your degree, volunteering can be a great way to get your foot in the door professionally. Members of Engineers Without Borders build a water supply system in Thailand. Image Tenpenken / Wikimedia CommonsFor instance, Engineers Without Borders flagship program, the International Community Program, offers volunteers the opportunity to adopt a community project and work on engineering solutions around the world. Last year alone, volunteers worked on about 700 projects across 46 countries, says JaclynWilmot, volunteer engagement director for Engineers Without Borders USA.Many of the programs volunteers are college students who are experiencing for the first time the engineering project process from beginning to end from assessment to design to sourcing sustainable materials to implementation. Its an experience you simply cant get in the classroom, and its one that could set you apart from the competition.Oftentimes in school, youre getting some really great theoretical knowledge, Wilmot says Youre reading books. Youre taking tests. Youre really learning the ins and outs of the field. But to have that field experience really makes them a strong candidate for their future careers.2. Gain new experiencesMore seasoned engineers can gain unique engineering experiences they may not have access to in their day jobs. The Engineering Service Corps program, for instance, is designed for highly skilled professional volunteers who lend their services to disaster recovery, agriculture, and sanitation projects across the globe. Some of our volunteers have said that theyve reached a point in their career where they feel like they have more to offer, and theyre able to do something that theyre not able to do in their professional job, Wilmot says. Some of our more seasoned engineers are retired, and this a way for them to continue sharpening their skill and utilizing their talents in a way thats real exciting for them, and really feels impactful. For You Engineers Break Down Borders3. Sharpen non-engineering skillsAnother way to get involved in dem gemeinwohl verpflichtet work is to join a local chapter. Becoming an officer of a chapter is like running a small business. Doing so helps you develop a versatile set of skills, such as project management, budgeting, working with people, and solving problem. You need to recruit for the right talent, hold regular business meetings, decide on projects that youll pursue, put project teams together, fundraise, market, communicate, Wilmot says So there are a lot of basic business elements that come into play, which really translate into the professional world, she says.4. Become a mentorIf youre a veteran professional, volunteering for nonpro fit or charitable organizations can give you the chance to mentor students and recent graduates. Engineering Without Borders requires professional mentors to be paired with up-and-comers for engineering projects. Its a mutually beneficial experience. The veteran gets to take the next generation of engineer under their wing, teach them what they know, and also learn from them, Wilmot says. I think that knowledge-sharing is exciting, and to be able to shape the next generation of engineers is really impactful for our more seasoned volunteers, Wilmot says5. Improve your resumeIts always good to approach volunteering with philanthropic motivation, but it certainly doesnt hurt to consider your own career prospects. Giving back to your community is a great resume enhancer.Current and prospective employers alike look highly on those kinds of experiences. Our corporate partners tell us that they love the fact that they can work with Engineers Without Borders to recruit some of these recent gr aduates, Wilmot says. They say that these students are anywhere from four to five years ahead of other recent grads in the same field because of the experience theyve received through EWB-USA.Tim Sprinkle is an independent writer.Read MoreCreative Approach to Engineering Improves GradesHow to Raise a Coder in Four Easy StepsLevitating with a Tornado of Sound Waves For Further Discussion

Dumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easy

Dumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easyDumpster diving at work No one said Earth Day would be easyMany of us are vaguely aware of Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, as the day that lights around the world go dim for a short while. For an increasing number of Americans, however, an awareness of green issues is a part of daily habit. Millennials are leading the charge. Nielsen found that environmental sustainability is an important factor in shopping for 75% of millennials and 72% of Gen Z.That reflects global trends. A 2014 Nielsen report stated that Fifty-five percent of global online consumers across 60 countries say they are willing to pay more for products and services provided by companies that are committed to positive social and environmental impact. What makes it into the shopping basket, of course, soon makes it into the workplace, as companies look to appeal to employees and consumers alike. We tracked down some corporations that adopted every-da y green policies and encourage employees to do the same. One perfect pair of shoesTackling the notion that more isnt always more, Jojo + Suse welches founded by Joanna Raworth, who is from England, and Susan Anehagen, from Australia. They met in California and compared the differences in consumerism in the U.S. and overseas. The two focused on a time when theyd take their shoes to the cobbler to be repaired, instead of just throwing them away. A time when handcrafted and long-lasting were built into the products we all buy. They formed a leather goods company with an idea to reduce welcheste and encourage people to make more conscious, thoughtful and informed decisions about the products they buy, with the ethos of buying just one gorgeous thing instead of accumulating many nice things. The best part is that their shoes are made by local artisans from around the world, contributing to sustaining their craft and livelihoods.Paid dumpster divingBootmaker Timberland has an ongoing commi tment to protect the outdoors as part of their business goals. The company went a step further and hosted a week-long Earth Week event at their Stratham, New Hampshire headquarters. The goal of the initiative was rubbish. No, were not being mean it really was. Timberland encouraged employees to reduce their individual and collective environmental footprints by examining what they throw away. The week kicked off with a voluntary Trash Can Turn-In, which invited employees to turn in their personal desk wastebasket for a week, which forced them to get up and walk to the nearest communal trash can to throw something out. The idea was that the effort to get up and find a garbage can would spark employees to think about what they were adding to piles of garbage.A company rep said that last year 20% of employees participated in this challenge, which aims to make employees more mindful of what they throw away since they will have to leave their desks to discard items. Another event was the corporate Dumpster Dive, where employees were invited to don Tyvek suits and sift through trash bags destined for the landfill to determine how much of the contents is actual trash, and what could be recycled or composted. There was also their annual Greener Living Fair, where external vendors set up booths displaying products and services that can help employees live greener lives. These vendors include local growers of organic food,earth-conscious cleaning products, environmental agencies, and clean energy suppliers.Greened JeansVeestro, a healthier prepared food delivery service, is looking for ways to make its packages easier on the environment. In 2015, the company switched all its plastic food trays for fully compostable paperboard trays, which received a positive response from customers. The new frontier for Veestro its in the process of testing a new eco-friendly insulation for shipping meals. The first candidate is recycled denim, which turns out to be a surprisingly good in sulator.Mark Fachler, CEO and Founder ofVeestro, told Ladders we began using denim in November 2016 on shipments to CA, NV, AZ , UT and ID. We like the performance of the denim insulation. Unfortunately, the denim adds a lot of weight to the package, so the company is testing alternatives as well. Fachler said, we began testing insulation made with recycled water bottles a couple of weeks ago. We still have a few more tests to perform, but it is lighter than denim. He plans an expansion If we are happy with the results, we plant to first replace denim on the states mentioned above and then roll in the rest of the country sometime in Q2, once we open our distribution facility in East Coast. Additionally, Veestro is working to make all our packaging fully recyclable and compostable. These three companies are just an example of how customers and employees are asking companies to be more green, and it looks like a trend that will go on long past the few hours a year that people are focus ed on Earth Day.

Why Staying in a Job You Hate May Be Good for You

Why Staying in a Job You Hate May Be Good for You Every day, I tell myself I want to be skinny. But what if I stopped and just accepted myself more instead? You may be wondering what this quote has to do with you and your career. The answer is everything. Many people havent yet reached their professional goals, or they are stuck in jobs with which theyre not happy. Perhaps youre one of these people. Rather than constantly reminding yourself that youre not where you want to be, you might be better off staying in a job you hate at least for the moment.Let me explainI was at the gym this weekend when I heard a twenty-something say the quote at the top of this deutsche post ag to her friend. I inserted myself into the conversation bytelling this woman that she was skinny, and that one day, in the future, she would look back on pictures of herself from this period of her life and realize how skinny she was.The conversation then shifted to our professional l ives. I learned that this woman was a lawyer a professionally unsatisfied lawyer. She said she spends fruchtwein of the day reviewing contracts and legal documents in seclusion. Her work environment didnt even come close to the collaborative environment she longed for.I chimed in again. Why stay in a job youre unhappy with? I asked.Financial freedom was the biggest reason, she said. Then, she shared advice a friend had given her Suck it up. This is what you have to do if you want to play in the big leagues. We debated the merits of her staying versus her leaving. Ultimately, she seemed resigned to stay where she was for a few more years, at least until she felt she was in a better position to make a meaningful move.Rather than focus on whats making her unhappy in the present, this woman has decided to accept herself professionally for the time being. That way, she can focus on getting a better job in the future. Its not always easy to accept the things we dont like or that dont fulfil l us in the moment, nor is it easy to resist the urge to change the situation as soon aspossible. Staying in a job you dont like isnt the most common advice youll find on a career site. Its also not the right advice for everyone but neither is the advice to immediately seek out a new opportunity. Everything is relative to your situation and your future goals. In a world that places so much emphasis on the need to be happy, it can be easy to overlook what we gain through struggle. In fact, listening to your feelings isnt always the best way to make professional decisions. Certainly, your present happiness should be considered, but it should also be integrated with your long-term goals.Looking to make a change or even totally reinvent yourself? Before you make a decision based on your current emotions, ask yourself What do I stand to gain by staying in a jobI hate? What doI stand to lose? The answers will help you decide what your next move should be.A version of this article originall y appeared on theAtrium Staffing blog.Michele Mavi isAtrium Staffings resident career expert.

This is the real reason you are addicted to coffee This is the real reason you are addicted to coffee Though sometimes I think the real reason I am so addicted to coffee is because Starbucks lures me in with their jaunty tunes and festive holiday cups, it turns out I can blame something else for my caffeine dependency. According to a new study, it comes down to genetics.Researchers from Northwestern University in the U.S. and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Australia looked at the link between how we perceive coffeeĆ¢€™s bitter taste and how much of it we consume in over 400,000 coffee drinkers in England.Interestingly those were more sensitive to the bitterness of coffee actually drank more of it.Ć¢€œGiven humans generally avoid bitter tastes, we interpret these findings as possibly a learned behavior,Ć¢€ co-author Dr Marilyn Cornelis, from Northwestern, told the  Guardian. Ć¢€œIf we can perceive caffeine well we associate this with the psychostimulant properties of caffeine and so seek more coffee.Ć¢€And the reason certain people are more sensitive to the bitter taste is due to their genetics. So you can blame mom and dad for your coffee addiction and your grandparents!

Scaramucci demonstrates the wrong way to handle conflict with co-workers

Scaramucci demonstrates the wrong way to handle conflict with co-workers Scaramucci demonstrates the wrong way to handle conflict with co-workers White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci has only had the job for less than a week, but heĆ¢€™s already making public enemies. After his government financial disclosure form appeared on Politico on Wednesday, Scaramucci didnĆ¢€™t think the information was public knowledge, as Politico had reported. He immediately believed that the information must have been leaked and he vowed to find the leaker that night.Scaramucci already had an idea of who it might be- though no apparent proof- and he went public with his speculation. In a since-deleted tweet,  Scaramucci said that he would be contacting federal authorities - specifically the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice- to find the leaker and included the Twitter handle of White House chief of staff Reince Priebus. New Yorker writer Ryan Lizza confirmed that Scaramucci meant to imply that Priebus was involved.Scaramucci has previously said that he and Priebus Ć¢€œhave been personal friends for six year sĆ¢€ who are Ć¢€œa little bit like brothers, where we rough each other up a little, which is totally normal for brothers.Ć¢€ But this latest public dispute appears to be more than a brotherly spat. Scaramucci later clarified that his tweet wasnĆ¢€™t a direct attack at Priebus, but a Ć¢€œpublic notice to leakers that all Sr Adm [senior administration] officials are helping to end illegal leaks.Ć¢€But he also ended that clarifying tweet by once more including the Twitter handle of Priebus.ThereĆ¢€™s lots to unpack here about ScaramucciĆ¢€™s tweet and subsequent press tour. Whether youĆ¢€™re a public servant to the U.S. government or an office worker, here are a few takeaways on how not to handle interpersonal conflict at work.1. DonĆ¢€™t @ the FBIThis should go without saying, but please explore ways to solve your conflict without involving federal law enforcement. Start lower, like with maybe your manager or human resources.2. DonĆ¢€™t take it publicPeople loathe being publicly humiliated, a nd itĆ¢€™s a good way to make a permanent enemy. Tweeting at your superior in a negative post is like CCĆ¢€™ing your boss in an email insulting them. Not only is it extremely unprofessional to air your dirty laundry in public, it also sows conflict, confusion and chaos among your staff.According to some journalists, however, that may be exactly ScaramucciĆ¢€™s goal.3.  DonĆ¢€™t make accusations without proofWhatever your chosen method of distribution for your grievances - whether it is social media (bad idea) or a private conversation - be responsible about your words. DonĆ¢€™t air your heated suspicions about your colleague unless you can back them up with more than a hunch. When you get the proof and can show the result, then you go to higher powers. So far, itĆ¢€™s unclear if the release of ScaramucciĆ¢€™s disclosure forms was actually illegal. Politico said it obtained the documents because it was Ć¢€œpublicly available upon request.Ć¢€ Under federal law, itĆ¢€™s okay to request to rea d such a report 30 days after itĆ¢€™s been filed. That forced Scaramucci to delete his explosive tweet, which made him look confused and unreliable.  The big takeaway? DonĆ¢€™t make accusations you canĆ¢€™t back up. It hurts your reputation and opens you up to contempt, much like the fierce public mockery Scaramucci has faced since waging his war against Priebus.4. DonĆ¢€™t make it personalScaramucciĆ¢€™s subtle and not-so-subtle jabs at Priebus go beyond attacks on his colleagueĆ¢€™s ability to do his job. They are direct attacks on PriebusĆ¢€™ character. The day after he implied Priebus was a felon, Scaramucci let the accusation hang without clearing it up.Ć¢€œWhen I put out a tweet and I put ReinceĆ¢€™s name in a tweet, theyĆ¢€™re all making the assumption that itĆ¢€™s him because journalists know who the leakers are,Ć¢€ Scaramucci said in a CNN interview Thursday. Ć¢€œSo if Reince wants to explain heĆ¢€™s not a leaker, let him do that. But let me tell you about myself. IĆ¢€™m a straight shoot er and IĆ¢€™ll go right to the heart of the matter.Ć¢€Implying that Reince is not a Ć¢€œstraight shooterĆ¢€ is not a ringing endorsement of PriebusĆ¢€™s character, and it makes an already messy situation messier and uglier. Appealing to the court of public opinion should be a last resort. Internal mediation between you and the co-worker causing you conflict should always come first.WhatĆ¢€™s the penalty if you donĆ¢€™t follow these steps? Reputational harm. Scaramucci, after only one week in the job - and still without official clearance - has made his public image about infighting and treachery towards a colleague, rather than representing the PresidentĆ¢€™s position. Members of the media openly called his comments among the craziest they had ever seen in politics. Projecting insecurity and instability generally wonĆ¢€™t help you get your point across or get bigger assignments. Learning how to handle conflict calmly and effectively will go much further.

Theres a less stressful way to receive smartphoneƂ notifications

There's a less stressful way to receive smartphone  notifications There's a less stressful way to receive smartphone  notifications After you feel a buzz in your pocket or see a flash on your phone, your attention is already fractured. You could pick up your phone and see if whatĆ¢€™s called you away is something you really need to address immediately - or you could try and focus on your work, all the while wondering what youĆ¢€™re missing out on.Since it can take close to 25 minutes to get back on track after a distraction, according to researchers who study productivity, this is obviously a recipe for a distracted day where not much gets done.Fortunately, we are learning better ways to handle smartphone notifications, according to research being conducted at Duke UniversityĆ¢€™s Center for Advanced Hindsight, which was presented by senior behavioral researcher Nick Fitz at a recent American Psychological Association conference. The research was conducted in collaboration with the startup Synapse, which is incubated at the Center.Fitz and collaborators have found that batching notifications into sets that study par ticipants receive three times a day makes them happier, less stressed, feeling more productive, and more in control. That works better than getting notifications normally, getting them once per hour, or even than blocking them of completely.Ć¢€œTurning them off doesnĆ¢€™t really work,Ć¢€ Fitz said in a follow-up interview after the conference. Ć¢€œBut we can [get notifications] in a smarter way.Ć¢€So many notificationsFor the particular study Fitz discussed at the conference, they analyzed the notifications that people got on their phones and found that the average person got between 65 and 80 notifications per day (people may check their phones more frequently, thatĆ¢€™s just the number of notifications that show up).So for their study, for two weeks they had a control group check their phones normally, one group receive notifications in a batch every hour, another group that received three batches of notifications (at 9 a.m., 3 p.m., and 9 p.m.), and one group that got no notification s.While not receiving notifications people could check their phones normally but wouldnĆ¢€™t see anything on their lock screen - the phone would ring for calls but not leave a Ć¢€œmissed callĆ¢€ on the lock screen. In general, people report that phone notifications make them feel stressed, unhappy, interrupted, and non-productive. That held true for the study control group. Receiving notifications even once an hour was so similar to this that it didnĆ¢€™t make much of a difference.Surprisingly for Fitz, turning notifications off completely didnĆ¢€™t work either. People did feel that they checked their phones more Ć¢€œintentionally,Ć¢€ which the researchers considered positive, but people were also anxious about what they were missing out on. ItĆ¢€™s possible that over a longer period of time, several months, people may have adjusted and enjoyed this experience more, according to Fitz. Or, perhaps a system that let some notifications through - emails from a boss or calendar reminders abou t important meetings - could have assuaged that anxiety. But three batches of notifications seemed to be the sweet spot, with people feeling more productive, positive, and in control.Building an even better systemAccording to Fitz, the ideal system would be context-aware - it would recognize the best times for a person to get a batch of notifications and might allow certain particularly important notifications through.Ć¢€œInterruptions, in general, arenĆ¢€™t great but itĆ¢€™s better if they come at opportune times,Ć¢€ said Fitz. The ideal system might be location-aware and give you your first batch of notifications as you arrive at work or hop on the subway, a second batch at the end of a lunch break, and a third batch as you head home for the evening. Perhaps emails might come through that way, but less-important notifications from Facebook would only be delivered once per day in the evening. The fact that this worked was somewhat surprising for Fitz, as notifications are just one comp onent that can add stress to complicated lives. But it turns out that even adding some element of control can really improve peopleĆ¢€™s lives.Ć¢€œItĆ¢€™s not as if this is some panacea, weĆ¢€™re not going to solve ADD with this,Ć¢€ said Fitz. Ć¢€œBut it certainly has an effect on people.Ć¢€The Synapse team plans on releasing the app they built to regulate notifications, Daywise, to the public within the next few weeks. (The study was conducted only with Android phones since it wasnĆ¢€™t possible to have that level of control over Apple devices for now.)

ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Manufacturing

ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Manufacturing ASMEs Five Strategic Technologies Manufacturing ASME's Five Strategic Technologies: Manufacturing This is the first in a series of ASME News articles on the Societys five strategic technology focus areas: robotics, bioengineering, clean energy, manufacturing and pressure technology. This article will focus on ASMEs activities related to the topic of manufacturing. A few years ago, ASME volunteers and staff began an effort to identify strategic technologies that could impact future ASME products, programs and technical content. After an extensive process that included gathering market intelligence and input from subject matter experts from both inside and outside the Society, the Board of Governors approved five strategic technologies that would be the basis of ASMEs technology portfolio. A $12 trillion industry, manufacturing was selected because of its significance as a key driver of the U.S. and world economies. A promising, emerging sector of the industry additive manufacturing, or 3D printing was identified as an entry point for ASME to begin to expand its presence in the manufacturing market, taking into account ASMEs many years of experience in product design and safety, additive manufacturings forecast of projected growth and its anticipated impact on the global supply chain. Additive manufacturing was a suitable niche for ASME to begin to expand its role in manufacturing, particularly given the growing digitization of the industry and the dearth of knowledge and experience in design for additive manufacturing, according Raj Manchanda, ASMEs business development director for manufacturing. One area that ASME could explore in additive manufacturing is the qualification of 3D-printed parts, Manchanda continued. As a manufacturer, it is important to know that the part you have printed is exactly what you said it would be, he said. It is also critical to verify that the material properties are what theyre supposed to be. Qualifying that part, particularly if its going to be a production part, is extremely important. There could be an opportunity not only for ASME standards, but also for conformity assessment programs, he said. ASME Standards Certification has undertaken a number of initiatives related to additive manufacturing over the past few years including the publishing of a draft standard for trial use, Y14.46-2017, Product Definition for Additive Manufacturing, which supplements the requirements of Y14.5 for additive manufacturing designs, and the recent introduction of a new standard, Y14.47-2019, Model Organization Practices, intended to be the foundation for design development efforts in a model-based enterprise (MBE) a manufacturing strategy in which an annotated 3D digital model serves as the definitive information source for all stages of a products lifecycle. In addition, several new Standards Certification groups related to manufacturing were recently formed, including the VV-50 Subcommittee on Verification and Validation of Computational Modeling for Advanced Manufacturing; the Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards/Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards (BPTCS/BNCS) Special Committee on the Use of Additive Manufacturing for Pressure Retaining Equipment; and a new Subcommittee on Monitoring, Diagnostic, and Prognostic Guidelines for Manufacturing Operations. Project teams are also currently working on a new B89 metrology standard concerning X-ray Computed Tomography and a supplement to the B46.1 surface texture standard that would address additive manufacturing. On the conferences and events front, the ASME Gas Turbine Segment and the International Gas Turbine Institute (IGTI) Division hosted a new event, the Advanced Manufacturing Repair for Gas Turbines, this past March in Berlin, Germany. Following the success of the inaugural Additive Manufacturing Leadership Summit that ASME held at PTC LiveWorx last June, the Society entered into a collaboration with PTC LiveWorx in which ASME will sponsor four sessions, including one on additive manufacturing and the digital transformation of the production line, at LiveWorx 2019 in Boston this June. In addition, the Manufacturing Engineering Division continues to program its annual Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC), which will include a track on additive manufacturing. The conference will be held from June 10-14 at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, in Erie, Pa. ASME Government Relations has hosted several congressional briefings on manufacturing during the past few years, including Manufacturing USA: Securing U.S. Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing, in partnership with NIST last October, and Strengthening Americas Manufacturing Heartland in partnership with AIChE in December 2017. More recently, ASME and the United Engineering Foundation sponsored two briefings that were hosted by the House Manufacturing Caucus: Producing Parts with 3D Printing: How Innovations in Additive Manufacturing are Being Deployed Across the U.S. Supply Chain, on March 27, and Organs on Demand: Whats Stopping Us from Made-to-Order Tissues and Organs, on April 10. Other recent and upcoming manufacturing-related activities at ASME include the publication of Mechanical Engineering magazines Manufacturing Special Report last October and the magazines cover story, The State of American Manufacturing 2019, this month; the launch of the magazines annual Emerging Technologies Awards program honoring engineering achievements in each of the five strategic technology areas; and the publication of a special issue of the ASME Journal of Medical Devices on the 3D printing of medical devices this fall and a special issue of the ASME Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering on machine learning applications in manufacturing next spring. Although the bulk of the Societys recent endeavors related to manufacturing have dealt with additive manufacturing, that specialty is just one of ASMEs entryways to a larger presence in the manufacturing arena, according to Manchanda, who pointed to smart manufacturing as another area of interest to ASME. In fact, the next meeting of the ASME Manufacturing Technology Advisory Panel the group of thought leaders that provides market insights to ASME regarding its manufacturing endeavors will focus on smart manufacturing and digital transformation. The experts participating in the daylong session, to be held May 30 at ASMEs headquarters in New York, will include representatives from IBM, Boeing, Stryker, Siemens PLM Software, Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Intel, HP, TechSolve, Infosys, the Southwest Research Institute and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining. Other manufacturing-related products and programs are currently in the works at ASME as well. Stay tuned for further updates in future issues of ASME News.

The fastest growing job in your state probably isnt what youd expect

The fastest growing job in your state probably isn't what you'd expect The fastest growing job in your state probably isn't what you'd expect The 21st century has all kinds of jobs that few people could have ever predicted. Just to name a few, there are brand evangelists, recruitment ninjas and shine artists, not to mention all of the so-called Ć¢€œwizardsĆ¢€ in IT departments. In this ever-changing work-scape, you may wonder, what are the fastest growing jobs near you? Not what jobs are the most prevalent, nor the most accessible right now. But whatĆ¢€™s trending upward?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow LaddersĆ¢€™ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The answer to that question is complex  because it really depends where you live. Each state in the U.S. caters to different industries that dictate  which job titles are on the rise.Thankfully, the fine folks over at Yahoo! Finance compiled data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and used information from Projections Managing Partnership to find out what industries and specific jobs were on the rise throughout the U .S. And some of what they found may come as a surprise.Credit: Yahoo! FinanceItĆ¢€™s no real shocker that on certain parts of the map, jobs involving sustainable energy are climbing. Eight different states all over the Union - from Hawaii, to California, to Florida and New Jersey  - ranked Ć¢€œsolar panel installerĆ¢€ as the fastest growing job. Wind turbine service technician was another popular occupation in the countryĆ¢€™s middle. Then, there were less obvious jobs that are becoming more and more in-demand. Idaho must have a burgeoning museum industry because exhibit designers are trending. The gambling industry is beginning to infiltrate New York. There must be a lot of RVs (or maybe tiny homes?) in Washington state, as mobile home installers are becoming big. And Oregonians appear to really love their puppies or emotional support peacocks - animal trainers have gotten a boost.ItĆ¢€™s research like this thatĆ¢€™s a constant reminder thereĆ¢€™s almost no way to know whatĆ¢€™ll be all the rage down the line. Because honestly,  who would have guessed there would be such a need for costume  attendants in Georgia? The message rings loud and clear: Do what you love, and maybe one day itĆ¢€™ll be trending on a map. Pro Tips for Closing Your Sales Opportunities

Pro Tips for Closing Your Sales Opportunities Pro Tips for Closing Your Sales Opportunities If you asked a hundred sales professionals what their best tips for  closing a sale are, you would get a hundred different responses. You would hear the old school crowd preaching the benefits of the assumptive and Colombo closes. The newer breed would claim that a sale is simply the result of the relationship and the  rapport  you have to build with the customer. While closing techniques are as varied as the sales professionals employing them, there are some tried and true tips to effectively close a sale. 01 Earn the Right Before you can expect to close a sale, you must first earn the right to ask for the sale. You earn the right by delivering on your promises  and by following up on customer questions. You earn the right by showing up for appointments on time, prepared and eager to serve the customer. Focus each call on how you can help the customer instead of what you can get from the customer, and you will eventually earn the right to ask for the sale. 02 Ask for Next Steps After any customer call or completed action item, ask the customer what he or she thinks should be the next steps. If they are unsure, make suggestions of next steps that move you closer to a close.  Remember that the next step could be to close the sale. Often, inexperienced sales professionals add too many steps before trying to close a sale.   03 Begin With the End in Mind Each step you take in a sales cycle should be leading you towards partnering with your customer. With each customer interaction, remind yourself of where you want to go and focus your efforts on moving in that direction. Without knowing where you are going, you may find yourself taking steps that lead you away from closing the sale. Keep focused on your purpose during each step in the sales process. 04 Give and Receive In most sales cycles, your customers will ask for something. Whether they ask for information, a lower price, product demonstrations or customer referrals, expect that you will be giving a lot during the sales cycle.A good rule to remember is that you should always ask for something after you give something. For example, if the customer asks for a demonstration, ask for their commitment to move forward to the next steps if the demonstration proves that your product or service will fulfill their need. While it may be better to give than to receive, in the sales world, giving and receiving are both equal players with equal amounts of importance. 05 Sell More Value In a price-sensitive market, the winner is the one who can show more value than the asking price. Value is determined not by the market but by your customer. Show them that your product or service has more intrinsic value than the price, and the sale is yours. 06 Under Promise A mistake that many rookie sales professionals make is to promise something that they cannot deliver. For example, if you are selling a product that requires the item be shipped, tell the customer when to expect the item and never suggest that you can get it to them sooner than what is realistic. It is better to tell them that delivery will take longer than what it probably will.  ? 07 Over Deliver If you followed tip No. 6, you will have ample opportunity to over deliver. Delivering an item earlier than expected will be seen by most customers as you going above and beyond for them. However, if youve over promised, youve probably set yourself up to under deliver. This creates a diminished sense of value in the customers mind, making it more challenging for you to close the sale. 08 Be Nice To Your Enemies You will have competition in every sale. Competition can come in the form of another company or from the potential of your customer making no decision. If you put down your competition, you immediately put the customer on the defensive. Doing so may cost you the sale. Instead, praise the competition where they are strong and point out where your company outshines everyone else. 09 Prepare and Plan If youĆ¢€™ve done your work and have built more perceived value than the price you are asking, itĆ¢€™s time for you to prepare and to plan for the close. Preparing includes gathering all the information, paperwork, forms, etc. that the customer will need to move forward. Planning means to anticipate any last-minute objections and how you will respond to them. 10 Close Your Mouth The golden rule in sales is simple: After a closing question is asked, the first person who talks loses. In other words, if youve earned the right to ask for a sale, ask for the sale then say nothing. Rookie sales professionals often talk themselves into and out of a sale.Their excitement and nervousness put their mouths on auto-drive, and they often end up either missing a buying signal or, worse yet, keep talking and end up bringing up something that the customer hadnt thought about yet. New thoughts in a closing situation usually result in sales delays. The temptation to talk is great, but once you learn how to resist the temptation and how to close your mouth, your sales closing percentages will increase.

Marine Corps Machine Gunner (MOS 0331) Job Description

Marine Corps Machine Gunner (MOS 0331) Job Description Marine Corps Machine Gunner (MOS 0331) Job Description The Marine Corps Infantry Machine Gunner - known as MOS 0331 in the Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) - handles large machine guns in direct combat. Also known as 31Ć¢€™s by their infantry platoon mates, these heavy machine gunners specifically handle the 7.62mm medium machine gun, the 50 caliber and 40mm heavy machine gun, plus their support vehicles. This position is within the  Infantry Career Field. Those holding the position of machine gunner (MOS 0331) have ranks from private to sergeant. Ć¢€œ31Ć¢€™sĆ¢€ tend to be bigger and stronger Marines and many do second weight lifting workouts of the day to build the strength needed to carry the extra rounds and heavy equipment. However, carrying an extra 70 lbs more than everyone else in the platoon will make you strong Ć¢€" slow, but strong. The added size and strength is due to the nature of their work. For example, the 240B above weighs on average 27 pounds and the 7.62 ammo loadout is twice as heavier than the .556 weapons as well. For instance, an M16A4 with scope, grenade launcher is typically around 9 pounds in comparison. The ammo of the typical grunt weighs 3.5 lbs for 100 rounds of 5.56 x 45. Also a 100 rounds of 7.62 x 51 weighs 7 pounds. Imagine now carrying 500 to 1000 rounds at a time. Spreading a 100 rounds throughout the platoon with each member is the way to go especially if everyone knows that your next patrol requires some time of being in a hot area with little support quickly on the way. Job of Marine Corps Machine Gunner (MOS 0331) Machine gunners provide direct fire in support of rifle and  Light Armored Reconnaissance  (LAR) squads, platoons and companies, along with infantry and LAR battalions. They can patrol mounted or dismounted. Summary. The machine gunner is responsible for the tactical employment of the  7.62mm medium machine gun, the  50 cal., and  40mm heavy machine-gun, and their support vehicle. Machine gunners  provide direct fire in support of the rifle and LAR squads/platoons/companies and the infantry and LAR battalions. They are located in the weapons platoons of the rifle and LAR companies and the weapons company of the infantry battalion. Noncommissioned officers are assigned as mortar gunners, forward observers, fire direction plotters, and squad and section leaders. When on foot, the Marine Corps machine gunner is primarily responsible for the tactical employment of the 7.62mm M240 medium machine gun. If traveling by vehicle, the machine gunner fires mounted weapons (the 50 caliber or 40mm heavy machine gun). How Machine Gunner Teams Operate Typically, Marine Corps machine gunners operate in three-person teams, often under combat situations and frequently in difficult terrain. Machine gunners must be prepared to fight in close quarters, both on foot and from mounted positions, and also potentially from aircraft. The team leader leads the three-person team and directs the machine gunners fire. The second person on the team, the machine gunner, employs the M240 machine gun. The third person on the team carries spare ammunition and barrels for the machine gunner and assists in the deployment and employment of the machine gun. When operating in small units, the machine gunner is a critical force multiplier in the squad or platoon. It is vital to survival to have perfectly operating equipment, adequate stores of ammo, and ready to replace barrels when needed. How to Become a Marine Corps Machine Gunner To become a Marine Corps machine gunner, a Marine must possess a score of 80 or higher on the General Technical (GT) section of the  Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. Being one of the stronger and bigger Marines in the platoon is not necessarily a requirement, but it fits the stereotype.   Machine gunners first must attend basic training and become a U.S. Marine Corps infantry rifleman. Following basic training in either Parris Island, N.C. or San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot in California, machine gunners attend the Machine Gunner Course at the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina or at Camp Pendleton in California. Your schools location will depend on your home base. At the Machine Gunner Course, you will be trained in military tactics, fire control and weapons systems, and how to become a team player within the U.S. Marine Corps fire team weapons or rifle platoon. Requirements/Prerequisites (1)  GT score, of 80 or higher. (2) Complete the Machine gunner Course at the School of Infantry, MCB Camp Lejeune, NC, or MCB Camp Pendleton, CA, or upon completion of appropriate MOJT. Duties. For a complete listing of duties and tasks, refer to  MCO 1510.35, Individual Training Standards. Related Military Skills (1) Rifleman,  0311. (2) Assaultman,  0351. Learn How Much Band Managers Get Paid

Learn How Much Band Managers Get Paid Learn How Much Band Managers Get Paid Band managers are very handy to have around, but up and coming artists often forget one thing in their hunt for a manager: once you get one to work with you, theyre going to want to be paid. Negotiating how your artist manager will be paid is VERY important. After all, not only is your manager  going to help you start making money, but youre also going to be splitting your income with them. It pays (get it?) to be sure you understand exactly how your manager expects to be compensated for their work. Band Manager Wages Although sometimes a manager may get a wage (it has been done), the vast majority of management deals are based on commission. That means that your manager takes a percentage cut of income you generated. What income they can touch is up to debate - and well get to that in a minute - but first, consider the amount of the percentage. The norm is around 15%, though some artist reps want 20%, particularly in the case of a new artist that is going to require a lot of upfront work before any money is seen. Often, this percentage is of your  gross  income - which means that even if you take a hit on a deal and actually lose money yourself, your manager is still paid. However, some managers get a percentage of your ??net, which means if you, say, lose money on a show and end up out of pocket, your manager doesnt get paid for that event. Sometimes, managers get a gross percentage of some income and net percentage of others. Other times, the percentage changes as certain earning thresholds are met. For instance, if a new artist agrees to 20% when they hire a manager, once they make a certain amount of money, the manager may agree to scale it back to 15%. Divvy up the Income Just as there is a wide array of ways the percentage can be calculated and applied, there are a number of ways to divvy up the streams of income. Some managers get a percentage of all income, period. Other deals are structured so that management gets a lesser percentage - or sometimes no percentage at all - on certain kinds of income, like songwriting income if your manager represents you as a recording artist. There are no hard and fast rules here - its simply a matter of negotiating an arrangement that is acceptable to everyone. Do keep in mind that managers will want to maximize their earning potential by tapping into as much of your income as possible, and they should be compensated for the work that they do. Going back to the songwriting example - if your manager represents you as a songwriter and as a recording artist, then they should be paid as such. Even when management gets a cut of all of your income, there are certain things they dont touch as a matter of course. Your manager shouldnt get a percentage of monies paid by to you by a label to pay for some other activity - recording, producers, touring, opening acts - this isnt income, but rather youre simply an intermediary for that money. There are lots of different flavors of manager payments out there. The only rule is that you need to come to terms BEFORE the work begins, so there isnt any confusion. By the way, many managers work on a handshake deal rather than a written contract. However, if that scares you, theres nothing wrong with writing up at least an informal agreement so that everyone knows where they stand.

Learn How to Prevent a Toxic Work Environment

Learn How to Prevent a Toxic Work Environment Learn How to Prevent a Toxic Work Environment Bullying is a widespread workplace problem, both within the legal profession and without. However, employers should not accept, shrug off, or ignore bullying issues because they lead to a toxic workplace, higher turnover, a bad reputation for the company, and potential lawsuits. For additional information on dealing with a bullying and a toxic work environment, review these articles: Bullying Facts and FiguresTypes of BullyingBullying StoriesWorkplace HarassmentBullying LawsProfile of a Bully Victim Keep reading to learn what steps can employers take to defuse a toxic workplace with tips from Jean Copeland Haertl, CEO Founder of Safety and Respect at Work, LLC in Boston. Bullying is a pattern of humiliating, offensive workplace conduct most often perpetrated by someone in a position of power and/or authority. Bullying often manifests as an abuse of power whose targets suffer serious and long-lasting emotional and physical health harming effects. Not unlike batterers who emotionally abuse their victims, bullies engage in learned abusive workplace behavior because they often get away with it. From working with bullies, I have learned that most, if not all, target specific employees. Bullies are also cognitively aware of their actions, changing their behavior when in the presence of superiors, often appearing charming and professional. While anyone can engage in workplace bullying, according to recent statistics from the Workplace Bullying Institute, 72% of bullies are bosses. The first and most important step an employer should take is to recognize that bullying is not something that an employee should be left alone to address. Simply suggesting that employees should learn strategies to respond to bullying is like telling a battered victim she needs to learn to communicate more effectively and directly to minimize the abuse inflicted by a batterer.? Organizational leaders should take ownership of helping to address and eliminate all forms of workplace abuse. Steps to diffuse a toxic work environment include but are not limited to: 1. Establish an Anti-bullying Policy Establish and implement clear policies and reporting procedures that address bullying. Most companies have a  code of conduct policies, but many of those policies are general, and/or solely address unethical and financial misconduct. Rarely do companies maintain policies with specific language that adequately defines a range of prohibited behaviors. 2. Implement Company-wide Training That Addresses Bullying. Once a sound policy has been established with clear and multiple reporting mechanisms in place, leaders must ensure all managers and employees receive training on how to identify, respond, and report potential bullying behaviors. Because many managers and employees have trouble distinguishing bullying behaviors from workplace violence and unprofessional behaviors, it is critical that training underscores the many ways bullies target their victims in the workplace. Unlike one misdirected and unprofessional comment, bullies perpetuate a pattern of coercive control, often isolating their targets, undermining their work, and engaging in an aggressive and humiliating behavior. Bullies are often known to most in the company. They are the elephants in the room much like perpetrators of domestic violence. Like batterers, bullies minimize, deny, sidetrack and blame their targets, hoping to avoid accountability for their actions. Training must separate managers from employees, and highlight the challenges and fears employees struggle with in reporting these kinds of behaviors. 3. Implement Disciplinary Action. Hold bullies accountable for their behavior by consistently and fairly implementing appropriate disciplinary action. Not unlike a worker who has violated a companys sexual harassment or workplace violence policy, employers must investigate all complaints related to mutual respect policy violations. Depending on the nature of the behavior and/or impact on the target, employers must take swift action and discipline workplace bullies - up to and including termination, if necessary. Sometimes, a bully who is confronted with the possibility of disciplinary action, including the fact that his/her behavior has negatively impacted another employee, will take steps to alter his or her behavior. Progressive disciplinary action can be combined with remedial training in some cases. I strongly discourage any form of mediation in these cases.
